Legendary champion jockey Damien Oliver has been taken to hospital after suffering a wipeout while surfing, just over two years following his retirement from a storied racing career. The 53-year-old Australian, who hung up his saddle in December 2023, posted a photograph revealing a significant gash beneath his chin, sustained during the incident.
Surfing Mishap Ends in Hospital Visit
Oliver, a world-renowned figure in horse racing with more than 3,000 career wins, acknowledged the accident on social media, stating he "came off second best in the surf." He expressed gratitude to the medical teams at Torquay Urgent Care Clinic, Torquay ambulance services, and Geelong Hospital, where nurses and ENT surgeons provided care. In his post, he remarked, "I thought those ambulance days would be long over," referencing his history of racing injuries, including a broken spine in 2005.
A Stellar Racing Career
Before his retirement, Oliver enjoyed a hugely successful 35-year career, highlighted by 129 Group 1 victories. He won the Melbourne Cup three times—on Doriemus in 1995, Media Puzzle in 2002, and Fiorente in 2013—along with two Cox Plate wins and four Caulfield Cup triumphs. His 2002 Melbourne Cup victory on Media Puzzle, trained by Dermot Weld, was particularly emotional, coming just days after the death of his brother Jason, sparking poignant scenes at Flemington.
Oliver also received the Scobie Breasley Medal, awarded to Victoria's best jockey, an impressive 14 times. On his final day of racing in Perth, his birthplace, he won all three of his rides, including a race held in his honour, capping off an illustrious career.
