Vladimir Putin has delivered a charged address demanding ideological conformity and loyalty to the state, lecturing education professionals on the importance of respect and obedience ahead of Russia's national Knowledge Day.
Unsettling atmosphere at Moscow university
The meeting, which was a celebration of the teaching profession in Russia, took place at the Moscow State Pedagogical University and was marked by an unsettling atmosphere as the Russian president addressed teachers, students pursuing teaching careers, and pupils in teacher-training classes.
The setting itself contributed to the bizarre tone of the gathering. Photographs from the event show the Russian leader sitting isolated in a wooden chair with a microphone, surrounded by a wide circle of educators in an ornate, wood-panelled university library. Rather than an open dialogue, the event resembled a stilted lecture on state-approved values. In a group image, Putin appears stiff and detached while standing among young teachers and students.
Teacher's role in moulding patriotic citizens
During his speech, the president sought to reinforce his regime's ongoing campaign to militarise and control the school curriculum, making it clear that a teacher's primary role is to mould patriotic citizens.
According to the official Kremlin transcript, Putin declared: "Only a teacher who commands respect and authority can fully perform another vital function – the formative one: fostering the best human qualities in children, instilling in them self-respect, respect for others and for their Motherland, and a desire to make their country an even better place."
He went on: "All these elements are, of course, extremely important for any country, including ours. At the same time, we have remarkable traditions and achievements in education and pedagogy that not every country can boast. We are also working to introduce innovations as widely and effectively as possible."
Fluctuating demeanour and Soviet-era parallels
His demeanour throughout the televised appearance fluctuated drastically, adding to the spectacle. At times, he appeared visibly agitated, raising his hand emphatically as he hammered home his points on authority. In other moments, the president seemed strained, notably clutching the side of his head with a grimace. This was contrasted by unsettling, wide-eyed grins while he tightly gripped his blue-rimmed microphone.
Putin also spoke about a recent executive order meant to elevate the status of teachers, attempting to draw parallels with Soviet-era practices such as "veteran-of-labour" status. However, beneath the promises of increased support, the core message remained clear: educators in Russia are expected to serve as strict enforcers of state ideology, ensuring the next generation remains unquestioningly devoted to the Motherland.
