Winter Olympics Presenter Issues Apology After Slurred Live Broadcast
An Australian television presenter has become a viral sensation after slurring her words during a live broadcast from the Winter Olympics in Italy. Channel 9's Danika Mason has publicly apologised for the incident, acknowledging she had "totally misjudged" the situation by consuming alcohol before appearing on air.
Presenter Blames Multiple Factors for On-Air Struggle
Mason explained that several factors contributed to her unclear delivery during the live segment. "Look, I totally misjudged the situation," she confessed. "I shouldn't have had a drink, especially in these conditions. It's cold, we've got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn't help as well."
The sports journalist, best known for her National Rugby League reporting, expressed embarrassment about the incident. "I'm OK, probably just a little embarrassed," Mason stated. "I want to take full responsibility. It's not the standard I set myself. So in saying that, I'm genuinely really sorry."
Prime Minister Comes to Presenter's Defence
The incident has even prompted a response from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who came to Mason's defence. The Prime Minister declared he was "proDanika" and maintained there was "nothing to see here," suggesting she had merely been impacted by jet lag rather than any serious misconduct.
During the problematic broadcast, Mason struggled through her sports bulletin, mixing up her words and confusing geographical locations. At one point, she began discussing coffee prices before abruptly changing topics. "Literally, the price of coffee over here is actually fine," she said. "It's more the price of coffee in the US that we are gonna have to get used to... I'm not sure about... the iguanas? Where are we going with that one?"
Colleagues Show Support After Incident
Studio presenter Karl Stefanovic chuckled in the background during Mason's struggling performance and later offered a lighthearted explanation. "Look, the cold weather is a thing, right?" Stefanovic said unprompted afterwards. "You can't actually move your lips."
When Mason returned to the Today show to issue her apology, colleagues showed their support. Today show presenter Jayne Azzopardi responded by saying, "We know how hard you work, Danika," while Stefanovic described her as a "legend."
During her troubled broadcast, Mason also seemed to mispronounce the rugby side Brisbane Broncos as "Brisk Moroccos" and confused the UK with the US while discussing sports news. Despite the difficulties, she attempted to continue with her segment, saying, "But anyway... Let's get into the day's sport, because there is plenty happening back home."
The incident has sparked considerable discussion on social media platforms, with many viewers expressing both amusement and concern about the presenter's condition during the live broadcast from the Winter Olympic venue in Italy.
