NBA legend Paul Pierce has publicly acknowledged that he is the biological father of a two-month-old baby, who is at the centre of a contentious paternity lawsuit initiated earlier this year. Court documents, reportedly obtained by TMZ, reveal that the former Boston Celtics star has formally admitted to fathering King Rafael Santiago Pierce, a child he shares with Princess Santiago, an event coordinator based in Los Angeles.
Pierce Seeks Joint Custody Amid Financial Demands
In a significant legal development, the 48-year-old basketball icon is now pursuing joint legal and physical custody of the infant. This move comes less than a month after Santiago filed a request for the court to grant her sole custody and order Pierce to pay nearly $30,000 per month in child support. Specifically, she is demanding $29,811 monthly, along with $100,000 to cover her legal fees and half of all reasonable expenses related to the pregnancy, birth, and post-birth, which she claims totals $18,846.
Background of the Paternity Dispute
In her initial filing back in January, Santiago asserted that Pierce had earned between $195 million and $203 million during his NBA career. She further alleged that he had publicly stated his endorsement earnings were sufficient to cover his expenses, allowing him to use his salary for generous expenditures on family and romantic partners. At the time, Santiago explained her actions in a statement, saying, "I filed for paternity papers after multiple attempts to resolve this privately. Paul Pierce is the father of my son, King, and I am simply asking for a paternity test so the truth can be confirmed." She emphasised that the matter was about accountability and doing what is right for her child, rather than seeking drama or attention.
Recent Legal Troubles for Pierce
This paternity case represents the latest in a series of public embarrassments for the retired athlete. In October, Pierce was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent after he was found asleep at the wheel of his Range Rover SUV on a congested highway. The incident occurred when California Highway Patrol officers shut down multiple lanes of Highway 101 to investigate a crash, leaving Pierce and other motorists stuck in gridlocked traffic for nearly an hour. Upon reopening the highway around 10:30 PM local time, officers discovered Pierce sleeping at the wheel just south of the crash site.
Following his arrest, Pierce took to social media to explain the situation, posting an image of the traffic jam with the caption, "Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep." He later clarified that he had simply fallen asleep due to being "old and tired," and provided a blood test to officers, who reported signs of alcohol impairment. Pierce has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Post-Retirement Career Challenges
Since retiring from professional basketball in 2017, the California native has faced professional setbacks as an NBA analyst. He was employed by two major sports cable networks, both of which ultimately terminated his contracts. In 2021, ESPN dismissed Pierce after he livestreamed himself playing poker with bikini-clad women while consuming alcohol and marijuana. He later resurfaced at FS1 in 2024 as a regular contributor on Undisputed with Skip Bayless, but that show was cancelled, leading him to move to another programme, Speak, which was also shut down.
Pierce, who won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and was nicknamed "The Truth" during his playing days, now finds himself navigating both personal and legal challenges as this custody battle unfolds. The outcome of the paternity lawsuit and his recent DUI case could significantly impact his public image and financial obligations moving forward.
