Patrick Reed Opens Up About Sudden LIV Golf Departure
Patrick Reed has publicly explained the reasons behind his abrupt exit from the LIV Golf Tour in January 2026, a move that marks his return to the PGA Tour after a four-year absence. The 35-year-old golfer, who won the Masters in 2018, resigned from the PGA Tour in June 2022 to join the rival LIV circuit before making a surprising reversal earlier this year.
Reed's Return to Traditional Golf and Family Priorities
In a press conference on Monday, Reed emphasized that his decision was driven by a longing for the traditional structure of professional golf and a desire to spend more time with his family. He described a pivotal moment during a tournament in Dubai, where he felt disconnected from the competitive atmosphere he craved.
"It definitely happened quickly," Reed admitted. "But when I was over there in Dubai, I realized I wanted to get back to the traditional way of golf and playing. I missed those battles on the leaderboard and the adrenaline rush."
He elaborated on how LIV's international schedule limited his family time, noting that his daughter is now 11 and his son is eight. "Time has flown," he said. "I want to watch them grow up and be home more, while still competing against the best players. This decision was best for my golf game and my family."
Competitive Form and Future Prospects
Since leaving LIV, Reed has competed on the DP World Tour in Europe, securing two wins and three second-place finishes since the start of the year. This strong performance has helped him secure one of the 10 PGA Tour cards awarded to top finishers in the Race to Dubai standings, though he must wait until the autumn season to begin playing full-time.
Reed is eligible to return to the PGA Tour for invitational events from late August 2026 and on a full-time basis in 2027, thanks to his past champion status. His recent form, combined with his history at Augusta National, has positioned him as a contender in this week's first major of the season.
No Bad Blood with LIV Golf
Reed clarified that his departure was amicable, with no underlying conflicts with his former employer. "There's nothing that I felt was going on between LIV and us," he stated. "We had a contract, but at the end of the day, I felt the best thing was to come back to the PGA Tour."
He expressed gratitude for his time with LIV but reiterated that returning to the PGA Tour was the right choice for his career and personal life. As he prepares for upcoming tournaments, Reed's focus remains on reclaiming his place among golf's elite while balancing his commitments as a family man.
