NRL Faces Calls to Book Olivia Dean for Grand Final as Tour Dates Align
A former State of Origin great has issued a direct appeal to the National Rugby League, urging swift action to secure a global pop star for this year's grand final entertainment. The plea comes as a fortunate scheduling coincidence makes the prospect a tangible possibility.
Corey Parker, a premiership-winning former Brisbane Broncos player, has publicly advocated for the league to target British singer Olivia Dean. Dean is confirmed to be touring Australia at the precise time of the season's decisive match.
Perfect Timing for a High-Profile Booking
'Olivia Dean, touring Australia at the same time as the NRL Grand Final,' Parker wrote in a social media post. 'That's who the NRL need to be going after for their pre-match entertainment. Make it happen @NRL.'
The timing is indeed ideal. Dean's newly announced 2026 Australia and New Zealand tour places her directly within the NRL grand final window, with the decider traditionally held in early October.
Her schedule shows performances in Melbourne on October 5 and 6 at Rod Laver Arena, followed by back-to-back shows in Sydney at Qudos Bank Arena on October 9 and 10. These dates fall within days of the NRL grand final at Accor Stadium on October 4, creating a clear logistical opportunity for the league to secure her as its headline act.
Dean then continues her tour with a Brisbane show on October 13 and an Auckland performance on October 17. Due to high demand, additional shows have already been added in Melbourne and Sydney, positioning her in major arenas across the same cities that host the code's largest audiences.
AFL Sets Precedent with Kylie Minogue Booking
This push comes in the wake of the Australian Football League securing one of the most iconic names in Australian music history for its own showpiece event. Kylie Minogue has been confirmed as the headline act for the 2026 AFL grand final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, marking her debut on the league's biggest stage.
The AFL described Minogue as a long-time target. 'Kylie has been on our wish list for a long time, and there is no better artist to headline the performance prior to our biggest game of the season,' stated AFL CEO Andrew Dillon.
Minogue expressed her excitement, highlighting the event's significance. Her selection continues a trend of high-profile AFL entertainment acts, following Snoop Dogg's headline performance at the 2025 grand final. Minogue's global profile, with over 80 million records sold and multiple major awards, adds considerable weight to the AFL's entertainment strategy.
Contrasting NRL and AFL Entertainment Approaches
The AFL has strategically positioned its pre-game entertainment as a central component of grand final day, staging performances in front of crowds exceeding 100,000 at the MCG. In contrast, the 2025 NRL Grand Final featured American singer Teddy Swims, who performed a set including hits like Bad Dreams and a cover of AC/DC's TNT at Accor Stadium, despite an illness scare prior to the match.
Parker's suggestion regarding Olivia Dean has generated mixed reactions online. Some supporters endorsed the idea, with one follower noting, 'Fantastic idea. I’ll also be seeing her in concert in Sydney five days after the NRL Grand Final.' Another added, 'Olivia is great, I love her music.'
However, detractors argued that Dean's musical style might not suit the energetic atmosphere of a rugby league event. 'Olivia Dean is amazing but don’t think it’s the right type of music for an NRL game,' one fan posted. Another commented, 'Not sure putting everyone to sleep before kick off is what the NRL want Corey.'
The debate underscores the ongoing challenge for sports leagues in selecting entertainment that resonates with diverse fan bases while capitalizing on strategic opportunities like Dean's coinciding tour schedule.
