Menzies Nearly Ended Darts Career After Table Punching

Scottish darts professional Cameron Menzies has confessed he came perilously close to terminating his career in the sport following a devastating outburst of temper at the World Darts Championship. The incident, which occurred after a first-round defeat to Charles Manby before Christmas, saw Menzies exit Alexandra Palace in disgrace after repeatedly punching a table, resulting in severe hand injuries that necessitated medical intervention.

Severe Consequences of a Momentary Loss of Control

Menzies, who secured a victory in his opening-round match at the Poland Darts Open on Friday, has now disclosed the extensive aftermath of his actions. He required surgical procedures and continues to undergo hand treatment and trauma therapy. In a candid interview with Oche 180 after defeating Ritchie Edhouse, Menzies admitted, "I'll be honest with you, a few times I've felt like wrapping it. I'm just not in a good place that way."

Permanent Damage and Surgical Intervention

The physical toll has been significant, with Menzies revealing, "Obviously what happened at the Worlds, I've done a lot of damage to myself. Basically I've no feeling in my fingers anymore because of the damage I've done." He elaborated that he lost sensation in his fingers for six weeks post-incident and had to consult a hand specialist. "I couldn't feel my fingers for six weeks. I had to go through surgery. I've still to go through hand treatment and trauma," he stated, highlighting the ongoing recovery process.

Menzies expressed deep regret over his impulsive behaviour, calling it "a massive mistake in my life" and noting the visible scar as a constant reminder. "You can see the scar. I have to live with that," he said, adding, "I was lucky it was not as bad as what it could have been. I'm not proud of it."

A Narrow Escape from Career-Ending Injury

Reflecting on the potential severity, Menzies acknowledged his fortune in still being able to compete, stating, "I'm lucky I can still play because it could have been severed." He described the emotional turmoil, saying, "No words could explain how I felt at that time. I was stupid and I have to deal with it." Despite the challenges, his recent performance in Poland indicates a tentative return to form, though he admitted to "struggling massively" in the aftermath.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of uncontrolled anger in professional sports, with Menzies' career hanging in the balance due to self-inflicted injuries that nearly forced an early retirement from the darts circuit.
