Former NBA star Lamar Odom has officially checked out of a rehabilitation centre in Los Angeles after successfully completing a thirty-day treatment programme, as confirmed by reports from the Daily Mail. The forty-six-year-old athlete, originally from New York, entered the facility at iRely Recovery subsequent to his arrest for driving under the influence earlier this year.
Arrest Details and Manager's Statement
Odom was detained by police on suspicion of DUI and an additional charge of driving at speeds exceeding one hundred miles per hour. Law enforcement officials noted that his vehicle emitted a strong odour of marijuana, and Odom himself admitted to smoking cannabis earlier that same day. However, Odom has publicly insisted that neither alcohol nor narcotics were contributing factors in the incident leading to his arrest.
His manager, Gina Rodriguez, provided a statement to TMZ explaining that Odom is actively attempting to cease his marijuana usage due to serious concerns that it could potentially lead him back towards more dangerous and harder drugs in the future.
Podcast Revelation of Childhood Trauma
In a recent and deeply personal podcast interview titled 'Cousins' with retired NBA stars Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, Odom discussed the origins of his substance abuse problems. When asked by McGrady about where his decision-making began to deteriorate, Odom revealed that his issues commenced with marijuana at the tender age of fourteen, which occurred shortly after the tragic death of his mother.
'My father was a heroin addict,' Odom stated candidly. 'If you start with pot and it doesn't get high no more, you're like "maybe I'll try cocaine."' He elaborated on the profound impact of his mother's passing, saying, 'My mom died when I was twelve years old. So when your moms die and you're in New York City, [it's tough].'
Neighbourhood Protection and Missed Potential
Odom, who was a high school basketball phenom growing up in Queens, expressed gratitude for the protective environment of his neighbourhood, which he believes shielded him from more severe consequences during his youth. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that his addictive behaviours escalated significantly after he retired from professional basketball.
'2015 is when it happened,' Odom recalled. 'I'll keep it real with you, I loved drugs. You're talking to a real addict. I sniffed cocaine. If I ain't gotta play ball, I don't have any responsibilities.' He described a pattern of avoiding cocaine during the NBA season but indulging heavily during the summer months, referring to them as 'great cocaine summers' and his method of 'beating the system.'
Near-Fatal 2015 Brothel Incident
The year 2015 marked a critical turning point for Odom, when he suffered a severe medical emergency at a Nevada brothel. The incident resulted in kidney failure, multiple heart attacks, and twelve strokes, necessitating life support before he eventually recovered. Odom continues to maintain that he was poisoned at the establishment, although he had previously admitted to using cocaine in the days leading up to the episode.
During the podcast, he clarified to Carter and McGrady that he was not under the influence of drugs on that specific day, attributing his distress to having just signed divorce papers with his then-wife, Khloe Kardashian. Odom's memory of the event is fragmented; he remembers sitting beside a bed and then waking up three days later with no recollection of the intervening period.
Current Wellness Efforts
In the wake of his recent rehab completion, Odom is now focusing on his health and wellbeing through collaboration with HealLO.co, a wellness application dedicated to supporting individuals in recovery. This step represents a continued commitment to overcoming his longstanding battles with addiction and building a healthier future post-basketball.
