Erling Haaland Makes Cultural Gift with Rare Viking Book Donation
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has made a notable philanthropic gesture by donating a rare 16th-century book of Viking sagas to his hometown in Norway. The historic volume, which details the lives of medieval Norse kings, will be permanently housed at the local library in Time, providing residents with a direct link to their regional heritage.
Record-Breaking Acquisition for Public Display
Haaland, alongside his father Alf-Inge Haaland, purchased the 1594 edition of Snorri Sturluson's chronicles at an auction in December. The acquisition cost 1.3 million Norwegian crowns, equivalent to approximately $133,636, setting a national record for book sales according to broadcaster NRK. This significant investment underscores Haaland's commitment to preserving cultural artifacts within his home region of Jaeren.
The footballer explained his motivation, stating: "I am living my dream, but unfortunately that is reserved for only a few. I have seen how books enable many people to dream and make their dreams come true." This donation adds a cultural dimension to the profile of Norway's all-time leading goalscorer, who is currently preparing to lead his national team in their first World Cup appearance in 28 years this June.
Haaland's Broader Interests in Strategy and Sport
Beyond football and literary philanthropy, Haaland has recently announced his investment in a new global chess tour, aiming to elevate the strategic game to a wider audience. He is backing Norway Chess, the organisation behind the forthcoming Total Chess World Championship Tour, set to launch next year.
Haaland expressed his enthusiasm for chess, noting: "Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything." He added that he believes the tour can transform chess into a larger spectator sport globally, praising the impressive work of the Norway Chess team.
This move aligns Haaland with other top footballers who have shown an interest in chess, such as Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Arsenal star Eberechi Eze. His compatriot, Magnus Carlsen, is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time, further connecting Haaland to the game's strategic elements.
The donation of the Viking book not only highlights Haaland's dedication to his roots but also positions him as a multifaceted figure in sports and culture, blending athletic prowess with intellectual and philanthropic pursuits.
