As the breaking news banner "Breaking - Burnham to start cost of living summer tour" scrolled along the screen, Leo revealed: "Prime minister Andy Burnham has finished his holidays, he's back, hopefully he's got a nice tan. He's set to start a national tour this week to directly ask the Great British public how government can improve their lives."
Officials on behalf of Burnham said he will be in "listening mode" as he spends August travelling the country to discuss the pressing cost of living crisis. Having promised on the steps of Downing Street to give the public 'breathing space', he is expected to announce measures to help with soaring bills, including VAT cuts on energy bills and a £2 cap on bus fares announced in his first week in post. Burnham will also focus on improving high streets and use the summer tour to build his 10-year plan for the country.
Criticism and Opposition
Leo didn't hold back in his criticism, stating: "We talk about this 10 year plan - it's very optimistic, isn't it? Working out plans and strategies for the fact that you may be in office in 10 years' time. Very hopeful!"
A spokesperson for the prime minister said he'll be getting out of Westminster and meeting people where they are. They added: 'He thinks Westminster has got used to telling people that everyday hassles - like hidden pricing and consumers being ripped off - must be accepted as part of life. He doesn't think that's right. That's why he's going to start rolling out a series of pro-consumer cost of living measures to give people some room to breathe.'
There was further bad news for Burnham as opposition figures hit back, accusing the prime minister of tinkering. Robert Jenrick said the prime minister should scrap green levies and taxes on energy bills, and also pledge to rule out tax rises in October's Budget.
