Tommy Fleetwood Expresses Relief as Family Returns to England from Dubai

Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood has spoken of his profound relief after his family successfully returned to England from Dubai, where they had resided for the past four years, amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The professional golfer, who is currently competing in the United States, revealed that concerns over his family's safety had been a significant distraction in recent weeks.

Family's Safe Return Amidst Regional Tensions

Fleetwood, who carded an opening round of 69 at the Players Championship in Florida, explained that his wife Clare and their children had been attempting to leave their home in the United Arab Emirates as Dubai faced security threats. The city has been targeted by Iranian drone attacks, which are reportedly in retaliation to American and Israeli strikes on Iran.

"It is difficult not being able to travel. That has obviously been difficult. But when you know they're fine, that's kind of a relief," Fleetwood told The Guardian. "I think Clare is very relieved now. She feels good and everything. It's just not a great time for so many people in the country. It's just unsettling for everyone, really."

Challenges and Lucky Escape

The family encountered obstacles during their departure, with one flight being cancelled or suspended. However, they managed to secure a flight out just in time. "They got lucky getting out because they got out on the flight and then I think something happened at the airport while they were in the air or something. So they got lucky timing-wise," Fleetwood recounted.

Despite the tense situation, Fleetwood expressed gratitude for the safety measures in place. "All I can say is that my family felt very safe and think the nation and the leaders have done an amazing job of making everybody feel safe and well and protected. I know my family have been safe and that's the important thing. But you would wish for different," he added.

Impact on Performance and Broader Context

Fleetwood admitted that the worries had affected his focus, stating, "It's easy for me to say it's been on my mind but at the same time I'm not the one who was there." His family's return has allowed him to concentrate more fully on his golfing commitments in the US.

In related news, the ongoing Middle East conflict is also impacting other events. A decision is expected on Friday to relocate the Finalissima football match between Argentina and Spain. The match, scheduled for 27 March between the champions of South America and Europe, was originally set to be played in Qatar but is likely to be moved due to the regional instability.
