Tragic Loss of Former Syracuse Quarterback Rex Culpepper
Rex Culpepper, the former Syracuse University quarterback and son of reality television stars Brad and Monica Culpepper, has died at the age of 28. The tragic death occurred following injuries sustained in a dirt bike accident in Georgia on Saturday.
Syracuse University's Heartfelt Tribute
The Syracuse University football program released an emotional statement on social media platform X, mourning the loss of their former player. The post featured a photograph from Culpepper's time on the field and expressed deep sorrow for the Orange family.
"Our Orange family mourns the loss of Rex Culpepper, who passed away this weekend at the age of 28," the statement read. "Rex lived his life with endless passion, having overcome cancer at the age of 20 while playing for the Orange. Appearing in 30 games, Rex played football as fierce as he lived life. Our hearts are with the Culpepper family & all those who loved him."
Survivor Legacy and Football Heritage
Rex Culpepper was the son of Brad and Monica Culpepper, both notable contestants on the CBS reality competition series Survivor. His father Brad had a professional football career before appearing on television, playing as a defensive tackle for multiple NFL teams including:
- Minnesota Vikings
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Chicago Bears
Following his NFL career, Brad Culpepper competed on two seasons of Survivor: Blood vs Water in 2013 and Game Changers in 2017, where he finished as runner-up. Monica Culpepper also appeared on two seasons of the show, achieving runner-up status in Blood vs Water and competing in One World during 2012.
Remarkable Resilience Against Cancer
During his time at Syracuse University, Rex Culpepper demonstrated extraordinary courage when diagnosed with testicular cancer in spring 2018. Despite this challenging diagnosis, he continued to play six football games that season, earning him the university's prestigious Jim DaRin Courage Award.
After completing an intensive regimen of 100 hours of chemotherapy, Culpepper was declared cancer-free by the Moffitt Cancer Center later that same year. His battle with cancer became an inspiring story of perseverance within the Syracuse community and beyond.
Academic and Professional Achievements
Following his graduation from Syracuse University in 2020, Culpepper pursued further education, earning a master's degree before enrolling at Stetson University College of Law. His academic journey culminated in admission to the Florida Bar, after which he began working at the prominent Morgan & Morgan law firm in Tampa.
Personal Life and Recent Engagement
Just last month, Culpepper announced his engagement to Savanna Morgan, whom he met when she was a cheerleader at Syracuse University. Morgan shared a heartfelt tribute to her late fiancé on Instagram, expressing profound grief over their unexpected loss.
"No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only 6 short years after meeting," Morgan wrote in her emotional post. "Rex didn't always believe in soulmates but towards the end he told me that he didn't realize what having a soulmate felt like until we felt like extensions of each other."
She continued to describe their relationship: "And one thing about us is that we lived every single day like it was our last. We did every little thing that we set our minds to, between learning new skills and hobbies, and traveling to new places, there was never any free time with us and not a moment spent apart. I don't regret a single day in our 6 years."
The tragic accident has cut short a life marked by remarkable achievements, personal resilience, and recent happiness, leaving family, friends, and the Syracuse community in mourning.
