Former NHL Player Mikhail Grabovski Faces Assault Charge Following Youth Hockey Incident
Former National Hockey League player Mikhail Grabovski has reportedly been formally charged with assault following an alleged physical altercation with a youth hockey coach at the conclusion of a contentious playoff match. The incident, which unfolded on March 14, has led to his suspension from league activities as police investigations proceed.
Details of the Alleged Altercation
The event is said to have occurred after an Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) playoff game between Grabovski's under-15 Markham Waxers and the York Simcoe Express. Authorities were summoned to the rink just before 11 p.m. on March 14 following reports of an assault. Police arrested a male suspect at the scene, while the victim, identified as coach Warren Cooper, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
According to court documents and media reports, the individual arrested was 42-year-old Mikhail Grabovski. The charge was officially sworn on March 30, and he is scheduled to appear in court on June 12 to answer the allegation.
A Heated Game Preceding the Incident
The playoff match itself was described as exceptionally volatile, with referees issuing a staggering 61 minutes in penalties for infractions including boarding, roughing, and head contact. Officials also levied a 10-minute misconduct penalty against the Markham Waxers for what was termed "disrespectful and abusive behavior" as the game concluded.
Following the Express's decisive 11-0 victory, sources indicate that Grabovski allegedly pursued rival coach Warren Cooper to the locker room area and physically attacked him. Video footage reviewed by media outlets appears to show referees rapidly skating toward a commotion at one end of the rink, with an off-camera individual heard shouting profanities.
It is further claimed that after coaches were separated, a death threat was uttered, though it remains unclear who made the threat or what precisely ignited the initial confrontation.
League Response and Legal Restrictions
In an official statement, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association condemned the behavior, stating, "The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is aware of this situation and does not condone this type of behaviour, nor does it reflect the values of the OMHA or the sport." Grabovski has been suspended by the league pending the outcome of the police investigation.
Upon his release, the former NHL star has been legally prohibited from having any contact with Coach Cooper or visiting locations where Cooper is known to be present.
Grabovski's Hockey Career and Prior Legal Issues
Mikhail Grabovski, born in Germany to Belarusian parents, was selected in the fifth round of the 2004 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He enjoyed a professional career spanning ten seasons in the NHL, also playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals, and concluding his tenure with the New York Islanders.
This is not Grabovski's first encounter with legal proceedings. He was previously named in a civil suit alleging he assaulted a couple in downtown Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics, a period when he was called up to represent Belarus but could not compete due to injury. That particular case was dismissed in March 2018 before reaching trial.
The hockey community now awaits the judicial process as this troubling incident casts a shadow over youth sportsmanship and conduct.
