Investigation Launched After Nazi Salute Photo from Dallas Stars Game Goes Viral
A formal investigation has been initiated following the viral spread of a photograph capturing a group of fans performing a Nazi salute during a Dallas Stars hockey game. The disturbing incident, which originally occurred back in December, has recently circulated widely across the internet, prompting significant public outrage and demands for decisive action from both the Dallas Stars franchise and their home venue, the American Airlines Center (AAC).
Arena and Team Condemn Actions and Launch Probe
The American Airlines Center issued a strong statement on Wednesday, confirming the launch of an internal investigation after the issue was brought to their attention. 'American Airlines Center (AAC) has zero tolerance for any acts of hate and/or discrimination, and we aim to ensure an environment for our guests that is free from disruptive behaviors, including foul/abusive language and obscene gestures,' the AAC declared in their official release, as reported by ESPN.
'As such, we strongly denounce the actions that appear to be depicted in the video footage and are conducting an internal investigation. All fans and attendees are expected to adhere to AAC and, as applicable, NBA or NHL Codes of Conduct when attending events.'
A spokesperson for the Dallas Stars organization echoed this stance, telling media outlets, '(We are) fully aligned with the arena's statement and working with them to find out exactly what happened.' This unified response underscores the seriousness with which both entities are treating the allegations.
Details of the December Incident Emerge
The video evidence of the incident originates from a Dallas Stars home game on December 21, where the team secured a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the widely shared footage, five unidentified fans are clearly seen extending their right arms in an upward angle, performing the recognisable fascist gesture associated with the Nazi salute, while celebrating a goal scored by their team.
It is noted that other fans in the vicinity were also celebrating the score but did not participate in the offensive salute. The video gained significant traction after being posted on the social platform Reddit, where one particular clip amassed over 4.4 million views, fueling the viral spread and subsequent public backlash.
Potential Consequences for Code of Conduct Violations
In their detailed statement, the American Airlines Center explicitly warned that patrons found to violate their code of conduct face serious repercussions. The arena stated that individuals could be subject to prosecution if 'the extent [of] their conduct constitutes a violation of applicable law.'
Furthermore, the National Hockey League's (NHL) official code of conduct sets clear expectations for fan behavior at all games and events. The league 'expect[s] that fans also fully support the values of respect, inclusion and safety at all times through their words, actions and interactions with other fans, arena staff, Club and event personnel, Players, Coaches and Officials.'
Violations of this NHL code of conduct are not taken lightly and can result in severe punishments, including the potential for a lifetime ban from all future NHL events. This policy highlights the league's commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees, free from hateful symbolism and actions.
The investigation by both the American Airlines Center and the Dallas Stars organization remains ongoing as they work to identify the individuals involved and determine the appropriate course of action in response to this deeply concerning incident.
