American chess grandmaster Hans Niemann has denied using a vibrating sex toy to cheat during a high-profile match against world champion Magnus Carlsen. The 20-year-old made the denial during an interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored, addressing the scandal that has rocked the chess world since September 2022.
Niemann defeated Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup in St Louis, Missouri, but was subsequently accused of cheating by the Norwegian grandmaster. The accusation sparked a legal battle, with Niemann filing a defamation lawsuit against Carlsen, Chess.com, and grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. The case was later dismissed, leading to out-of-court discussions.
During the interview, Morgan directly asked Niemann about the specific allegation that he used anal beads, a remote-controlled sex toy, to receive signals. Niemann responded: 'Well, your curiosity is a bit concerning, you know – maybe you're personally interested, but I can tell you, no.'
Niemann admitted to cheating twice in online matches on Chess.com at ages 12 and 16, but denied any cheating in the Sinquefield Cup or any in-person game. Chess.com's investigation claimed he had 'likely' cheated in over 100 online games, but found no determinative evidence of cheating in over-the-board play.
Carlsen later acknowledged the Chess.com report, stating there was no determinative evidence of wrongdoing by Niemann. Niemann told Morgan the experience has 'strengthened his resolve' and taught him important lessons about life and chess.
