Cameron Brink, the 23-year-old centre for the Los Angeles Sparks, has returned to the WNBA after a 13-month layoff caused by a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Despite fouling out in a recent tight game against the Indiana Fever, her enthusiasm on the bench was unmistakable, reflecting a player who prioritises team success over personal glory.
Drafted second overall in 2024 out of Stanford, Brink quickly became one of the league's brightest young stars, securing endorsements including a landmark deal with New Balance, making her the first female basketball player on their roster. Yet those close to the team describe her as far from the stereotypical self-absorbed celebrity. Teammate Azurá Stevens noted that Brink intentionally includes niche groups of people, a rare trait given her profile.
The forced hiatus due to injury allowed Brink time for introspection. She described it as a spiritual journey to discover who she is outside of basketball, acknowledging that her playing career will likely last only about 15 years. This period also rekindled her childhood interest in the arts, including pottery, pastels, and fashion.
Brink recently hosted a podcast with her god-sister Sydel Curry, titled Straight to Cam, but has decided to take a break to focus fully on basketball and making a tangible impact. She expressed a desire to help marginalised groups, potentially through inclusive fashion, such as designing shoes and clothing for non-standard sizes. “I love doing the podcast, I just feel like I don’t need to have that kind of platform right now,” she said.
Sparks head coach praised Brink for keeping “the main thing the main thing” during a year of big questions. As the Sparks push for a playoff spot, Brink's renewed sense of purpose appears to be driving both her game and her broader ambitions.
