Former New York Jets quarterback Browning Nagle has died at the age of 57 after a battle with colon cancer, his alma mater the University of Louisville confirmed on Saturday.
Nagle, who also played for the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts during a five-year NFL career, is remembered as a Fiesta Bowl legend from his time at Louisville. He threw for 4,653 yards and 32 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter, earning MVP honours.
His most notable performance came in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, where he led the Cardinals to a 34-7 victory over Alabama. Drafted 34th overall by the Jets in 1991, Nagle threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns in his first start but was released before the 1994 season.
He later started one game for the Colts, completing eight of 21 passes for 69 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Nagle also had a brief stint in the Arena Football League with the Orlando Predators and Buffalo Destroyers.
Louisville said in a statement: 'We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great. His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program.'
