BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell have paid tribute to a devoted royal superfan following his death. Terry Hutt, whom even the late Queen reportedly called 'Union Jack Man', has passed away at the age of 91.
A Life Dedicated to the Monarchy
Hutt was a familiar face at numerous royal events, often camping out overnight or arriving early to secure a front-row spot. He famously spent nearly two weeks on a bench in London awaiting the birth of Prince George in 2013, and again at age 79 for Princess Charlotte's arrival in 2015.
Announcing the sad news on BBC Breakfast, Jon Kay told viewers: 'Some sad news that Terry Hutt, who you all recognise, known to many of us as the Union Jack Man at royal occasions and royal celebrations, has passed away at the age of 91.'
Sarah Campbell added: 'Met him many times. He made headlines around the world for appearing at numerous royal weddings and births, dressed head to toe in red, white, and blue.' She described him as 'absolutely part of the furniture at every royal event' and noted that 'he always had a smile on his face. And it's sad. Royal events won't quite be the same without him.'
More Than a Fan
The tribute included a report from correspondent Andy Howard, who highlighted that Hutt's love for the royals began at age four when the then Queen Elizabeth visited his neighbourhood after the Blitz. Howard noted: 'Terry Hutt certainly knew how to stand out from the crowd, and he'd had plenty of practice. For years, he went to royal events dressed from head to toe in flags.'
In a clip from the report, Hutt explained his dedication: 'People say to me, "It's only another baby." That's a royal baby. That's the difference.'
Beyond his royal enthusiasm, Hutt was also a tireless campaigner for the NHS, disability groups, and free bus passes for the elderly. Remarkably, he had been given six to 12 months to live in 1984 after suffering a triple heart bypass and kidney cancer, yet he continued his passionate advocacy for decades.
BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am.
