Many fans of Married At First Sight (MAFS) wonder if the couples are truly married. The answer depends on the version of the show. British audiences are currently watching the finale of the latest Australian series, which has featured dramatic dinner parties, emotional final vows, and two-part reunion specials. Soon, the American version will air on E4 and Channel 4's streaming service, followed by MAFS UK.
Are the Marriages Legitimate?
The show's concept involves strangers consenting to be matched by experts, meeting for the first time at the altar. They receive no information about their spouse beforehand. After vows, they embark on a two-month experiment including a honeymoon, cohabitation, and meeting friends and family. However, in many versions, these unions are not legally recognised.
MAFS Australia
A Channel 9 representative explained: "In order to comply with the Australian Marriage Act (1961) which requires one month and one day notification, a marriage in law was not conducted. Each participant embarked on a commitment ceremony with a wedding celebrant." Thus, the Australian version features commitment ceremonies, not legal marriages.
MAFS UK
In the first five series of the British edition, marriages were legally binding, leading to real divorces. From 2021, producers adopted the Australian format, replacing legal marriages with commitment ceremonies overseen by a celebrant, including guests, bridal gowns, dancing, speeches, and cake.
MAFS US
The US version features legally recognised weddings. According to People magazine, contestants sign pre-nuptial agreements and receive support for potential divorce expenses.
Celebrant's Explanation
Celebrant Kelly Hawes, who appeared on the UK version, clarified in a TikTok video: "One question I am often asked is do they actually get married on Married At First Sight UK? Well, no. They don't do the legal registration of marriage. What they are having is a commitment ceremony." She added that this avoids adding to divorce statistics and keeps the focus on entertainment.
Married At First Sight Australia is streaming on Channel 4.
