Andy Burnham was officially appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, July 20, 2026, after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. He arrived with his wife, Marie-France van Heel, in a convoy for the appointment ceremony. The couple have been married for over 25 years.
Who is Marie-France van Heel?
Marie-France van Heel, known as Frankie to friends, is Dutch and lived in Belgium before studying at Cambridge University. She met Andy Burnham in 1989 at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where both were undergraduates. They married in 2000 and have three children: a son and two daughters. The family is described as tight-knit and owns a bichon frise named Axel.
Unusual Blind Date Appearance
Their relationship took an unusual turn when van Heel appeared on Cilla Black's ITV show Blind Date in 1992. Burnham said he watched from behind the sofa as she chose “Will from Surrey,” who wore dungarees over a red jumper. Despite this, the couple rekindled and eventually married.
Professional Career
Van Heel has spent much of her career in marketing. After working at BSkyB, she founded MVH Marketing, then became chief strategy officer at London-based agency Heavenly, which worked on campaigns for HSBC, England Rugby, and the BBC. She is now chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, a firm that owns large parts of Manchester’s electric vehicle charging network. To avoid conflicts of interest while Burnham was Greater Manchester mayor, he distanced himself from decisions about Iduna and declared his wife’s job.
Public Appearances
Van Heel has largely stayed out of the limelight since Burnham became an MP in 2001. She did not join him on stage after his Labour leadership acceptance speech but was pictured embracing him in the hall of the TUC’s headquarters, where their children sat in the front row. She accompanied him to Buckingham Palace for the appointment as Prime Minister.
Appointment as Prime Minister
On Friday, Burnham was named Labour Party leader, and on Monday he became Prime Minister. He succeeded Sir Keir Starmer, who resigned last month. Starmer visited Buckingham Palace at 11:30am to formally give notice, then Burnham arrived with van Heel. Buckingham Palace stated: “His Majesty received in audience the Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury. Ms Marie-France van Heel was also received by His Majesty.” After the audience, Burnham returned to Number 10 to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister.
