US Official Celebrates Iran's World Cup Exit

A senior United States government official has openly expressed delight at Iran's elimination from the World Cup. Markwayne Mullin, the US Department of Homeland Security secretary, stated during a security briefing that he was "so happy" Iran's campaign had ended and that the team would not return.

Iran's participation in the tournament was uncertain after US and Israeli airstrikes on the country in February. Despite drawing all three group-stage matches, Iran came close to advancing but were denied victory against Egypt by a marginal offside call, resulting in their narrow elimination.

Iran's Complaints and Visa Issues

Iran's federation lodged multiple complaints about their treatment by US authorities during the World Cup. Coach Amir Ghalenoei described his team as the "most oppressed" at the tournament. The team moved their training base to Tijuana, Mexico, in May after initially planning to stay in Tucson, Arizona. All three of their matches were played in the US: two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

One key complaint was the requirement to leave the US immediately after each match. Mullin confirmed this was a pre-arranged agreement with FIFA, saying: "That was just an agreement we had – to just go ahead and let them go. The game was over, let them get back to the hotel, their base camp where they're at. They're more comfortable there."

Mullin's Reaction and Visa Revocation

Mullin added: "I'm just glad they're done, and they're not coming back. I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the US soil, and I might've sung a song or two or maybe even danced a happy dance." The comment underscores the tense political backdrop surrounding Iran's involvement in the World Cup.
