Donald Trump has described the January 6 Capitol riot as a “day full of love” while launching a fresh attack on CNN and The New York Times for their coverage of the event.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the former US president accused the outlets of “false reporting” and “abusing people so badly”.
Referring to the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, Mr Trump claimed that the publications “destroyed great people” with their reporting. He insisted that “people went there with love”, adding: “There was so much love and friendship. It was the most amazing thing. People were crying.”
Mr Trump’s comments come as he continues to downplay the severity of the insurrection, in which a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
