Reform UK MP and Labour Peer Clash in Heated Sky News Row

A Reform UK MP and a Labour peer clashed in a heated exchange on Sky News, with accusations of talking rubbish and interruptions flying back and forth.

On-Air Confrontation

Presenter Anna Botting was joined by Labour peer Baroness Thangam Debbonaire and Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin in Wigan, where the pair became embroiled in a fierce row. The dispute followed Andy Burnham's victory in Makerfield, where he defeated Reform by a margin of 9,000 votes and boosted Labour's vote share by 10 percentage points.

During the early hours of Friday morning, the two politicians clashed repeatedly, with the argument escalating into a full-blown exchange. The discussion turned to Nigel Farage and a substantial sum of money he had received. In early 2024, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage received a £5 million personal gift from Christopher Harborne, a British cryptocurrency investor and the party's largest financial backer. The undisclosed funds have sparked an ongoing Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards inquiry over whether he breached Commons registration rules.

Dispute Over Funds and Security

Addressing the funds, Ms Pochin stated: "In terms of the £5 million, Nigel received that as a gift before he was in politics. So he doesn't need to declare it." Baroness Debbonaire attempted to cut in, only for the Reform UK MP to snap, "No!" while wagging her finger. The House of Lords member fired back: "You have been interrupting me all evening, Sarah!" As Ms Pochin tried to discuss the funds, the former Labour MP kept speaking, criticising: "He took that £5 million... he has been in politics for 20 years."

The Reform MP continued: "Nigel has had his security taken away by the Labour government which is spiteful. He is a politician that has been a target. And now he has to pay for his own security." Baroness Debbonaire spoke over her, insisting Nigel does not have to fund his own security. "Parliament provides security as you very well know," she stated.

Escalation and Intervention

The politician then angrily responded: "You have been interrupting me all night Sarah and now you're just talking rubbish. He took that £5 million in the run up to the general election." Ms Pochin shot back: "You know nothing about it." As the peer outlined she had served as an MP for more than two decades, Ms Pochin declared: "And you lost your seat to the Green Party." Baroness Debbonaire then raged at the MP, resulting in Ms Pochin calling her remarks 'outrageous'.

The Sky News presenter was compelled to intervene during the heated exchange, which subsequently sparked discussion among social media users. One argued: "I think she's just shown she's had enough of the b*****ks that gets trotted out and because it's after the watershed she's let rip. Rightly so." Another remarked: "Put her on the spot like this. If she has to pivot back to talking about the Farage £5 mill to get away then jobs being done." A third commented: "The presenter doing appalling job, reinforcing idea what Sarah saying is fact about Farage security by staying silent. Then treats them both equally, implies they're bickering, by suggesting they move on..."
