Critics point to soaring inflation, a 325,000 rise in unemployment, and an extra £66bn in taxes on families and businesses during her tenure. Reeves also boasted that "stability restored, investment delivered and reform to our economy under way," and claimed that "the lives of ordinary working class people have been improved."

Burnham, who took office after Keir Starmer resigned, has been met with skepticism from financial experts. Borrowing costs rose at the fastest pace in the G7 on his first day. He has pledged to stick to existing fiscal rules, saying: "I've always taken a very prudent approach."
