Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy have been dismissed by incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham as he reshapes his top cabinet team. Other high-profile departures include Keir Starmer loyalists Steve Reed, the Housing Secretary, and Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle.
Reeves Confirms Departure
In a statement on social media, Ms Reeves, who has overseen the Treasury since Labour's general election victory two years ago, confirmed her exit. She said: "It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The economy today is stronger, fairer and more resilient because of the choices we have taken as a Labour government over the past two years."
She added: "Stability restored, investment delivered and reform to our economy under way. I said when I was appointed Chancellor that I would judge my time in office if the lives of ordinary working class people have been improved. I’m proud to say that they have." Reeves also encouraged young women: "Let my time in office show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams."
Lammy's Farewell
Mr Lammy, who served as Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary, and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister, also confirmed his departure on X. He stated: "It has been the greatest privilege of my life, coming from humble beginnings in Tottenham, to serve in government as Keir Starmer's Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister."
Lammy highlighted achievements including rebuilding relations with European allies post-Brexit, supporting Ukraine, championing the global south, and leading Britain’s recognition of the State of Palestine. He added: "I would have been proud to continue serving in cabinet. But a new Prime Minister is entitled to build his own team."
Reed's Parting Shot
Steve Reed, a staunch Starmer loyalist, left with a pointed message. He said: "Keir Starmer showed loyalty to me by appointing me to his cabinet. I make no apology for returning that loyalty. It's what is expected of functioning teams and I hope those who did not show loyalty to Keir will now show it to you." However, he pledged to "do everything in his power" to help Burnham succeed.
