Vladimir Putin has issued a new statement celebrating Russia’s nuclear capabilities and demanding "nuclear parity", amidst ongoing tensions with the West that have sparked fears of a third World War.
The Russian President made the thinly-veiled threat whilst congratulating current and former workers of the country's nuclear industry on their professional holiday. In his address, Putin praised the historic foundations of Russia's nuclear project and the ongoing efforts of the State Corporation Rosatom in maintaining the nation's technological sovereignty and energy sector.
Culture Forum remarks
The statement comes shortly after Putin's appearance at the 12th St Petersburg International United Cultures Forum, where he addressed the impact of global conflicts and Western sanctions on international relations. During the cultural forum, the Russian leader pointedly remarked that political and economic ties have been "frozen or brought to a standstill by various disagreements, sanctions and restrictions" due to profound global transformations and competition between nations.
Putin used the opportunity to suggest that culture must build bridges where politics has failed, portraying Russia as resilient in the face of external pressures. However, his subsequent remarks on the nuclear industry struck a far more combative tone as he emphasised the strategic importance of Russia's atomic capabilities.

Providing his full remarks to nuclear workers, Putin stated: "You rightfully take pride in the glorious history of the Russian nuclear industry, in the outstanding scientists and practitioners of this field who founded our nuclear project, in the many generations of their talented students and followers, and in their dedication and hard work that created the advanced production and energy sector, launched hundreds of new industrial facilities, research institutions and design bureaus, ensuring nuclear parity."
He continued by praising the modern workforce, adding: "Today, the workers of State Corporation Rosatom carefully preserve and multiply this unique legacy, successfully applying their wealth of experience, powerful intellectual potential and the innovative capabilities of the nuclear industry to strengthen the Russian economy and energy sector, to ensure our country's technological sovereignty, and to contribute to the implementation of breakthrough solutions in medicine and space, and prospective Arctic programmes.
"By expanding fundamental and applied research and taking modern approaches to its staffing policy, they lay a solid foundation for the industry's further progress."
Concluding his address with a clear nod to the geopolitical importance of the sector, Putin said: "I firmly believe that you will continue to successfully address the industry's strategic tasks for the benefit of Russia and our citizens."
