Luke Donald has expressed his delight at Jon Rahm being available for Ryder Cup selection, following the Spaniard's agreement with the DP World Tour to retain his membership and eligibility for the 2027 event at Adare Manor. Donald, who has captained Rahm in two victorious Ryder Cup campaigns, believes there is ample time for any necessary reconciliation.
Rahm's Ryder Cup Eligibility Secured
Rahm, a pivotal figure in Europe's wins in Rome and New York, faced potential ineligibility due to his ongoing dispute with the DP World Tour. However, a deal reached last week, similar to one signed by eight other LIV golfers in February, ensures his participation. Donald commented: "Delighted that a resolution has happened and that he's available as someone that can be a part of the Ryder Cup team."
Donald's Stance on the Agreement
Donald, who is not involved in DP World Tour policy, spoke with Rahm to understand his perspective. "He's played four and obviously two under my captaincy and done extremely well. So to have him available for selection is pretty cool," Donald said ahead of the US PGA Championship.
Uncertainty Over LIV Golf's Future
LIV golfers are currently ineligible for the Ryder Cup, but the tour's future is uncertain after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced plans to withdraw financing by year-end. Donald remains cautious: "We don't really know what's going to happen with LIV. We'll just wait and see. I'm not worried about it too much right now."
Building Bridges Within the Team
Rahm had previously criticized the DP World Tour, accusing it of "extortion." When asked about potential bridges to build, Donald noted: "I think time is certainly on our side. It's 18 months until the Ryder Cup. I think the longer you leave that, the more onus is on me to potentially help with some of those bridges." He added that within the team room, players are aligned: "Even brothers fight sometimes. But deep down, they love each other and the mission is pretty clear when we play a Ryder Cup and that's to win."
Donald's Third Captaincy
Donald is preparing for his third stint as captain, a role he might never have assumed had Henrik Stenson not been stripped of the job in 2023 after joining LIV. Reflecting on his unexpected journey, Donald said: "I'm a big believer that things happen for a reason. To obviously have one opportunity to do it in Italy was incredible. Now I'm sitting here having three opportunities, I never would have dreamed that."
