Active Labour members have expressed frustration over the ongoing speculation about a potential challenge to Keir Starmer’s leadership, arguing that it distracts from pressing national and global issues. In letters to the editor, Fiona O’Farrell criticised the “relentless speculation and briefings” from allies of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, calling it “arrogance beyond belief” that a sitting MP should give up their seat to allow Burnham to return to Parliament. She noted that Burnham has already run twice unsuccessfully for the Labour leadership and chose to leave his parliamentary seat to become mayor.
Sarah Mulholland highlighted the achievements of the Labour government under Starmer, including the renters’ reform bill, online safety bill, increased minimum wage, and plans for special educational needs provision. She praised Starmer’s handling of transatlantic relations and repair of ties with Europe, urging voters to “value deeds instead of words”. She contrasted this with the recent local election results, where voters backed a “man of many words but few policies”.
Jennifer Evans questioned the role of Chancellor Rachel Reeves, attributing to her many unpopular decisions such as cuts to winter fuel allowance, delay in removing the two-child benefit cap, rises in national insurance, and threats to personal independence payments. She called for Starmer to sack Reeves and reinstate Anneliese Dodds to put the economy on a more sustainable footing.
