James Cleverly has resigned from the Conservative shadow cabinet after losing the race to become London's mayor, the party has confirmed.
The former home secretary had been widely expected to take on a senior role in the party's frontbench team following the mayoral contest.
Defeat in the capital
Cleverly finished second in the mayoral election, behind the Labour candidate, who secured a third term in office.
The result was a blow to the Conservatives, who had hoped to make gains in the capital after a series of difficult national polls.
Party response
A Conservative spokesman said: "We are grateful to James for his service and understand his decision to step back from the frontbench."
The resignation comes as the party continues to rebuild under its current leadership, with a reshuffle of the shadow cabinet expected in the coming days.
