Italy's World Cup Replacement for Iran Rejected by Sports Minister
Italy's World Cup Replacement for Iran Rejected

Italian sports minister Andrea Abodi has firmly dismissed a proposal for Italy to replace Iran at the 2026 World Cup, describing the idea as "not appropriate" and reaffirming that qualification should be decided on the pitch.

Proposal by Trump Envoy

Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy to US President Donald Trump, suggested that Italy should be fast-tracked to the World Cup after their shock defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in last month's playoffs. Zampolli argued that the four-time winners Italy would "have the pedigree to justify their inclusion." However, Abodi rejected the notion, stating that the tournament should remain meritocratic.

Minister's Response

"Italy's possible requalification for the 2026 World Cup, which US president Donald Trump's envoy, Paolo Zampolli, has reportedly proposed to Fifa, is firstly not possible, and secondly not appropriate," Abodi told Sky News. "I don't know what comes first. Qualification is on the pitch."

Iran's Status

Iran's participation has been under speculation due to ongoing tensions with the US and Israel. They are scheduled to play two group games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. While there were discussions about moving their matches to co-host Mexico, that idea appears unlikely. Iran has not requested to withdraw, and Fifa president Gianni Infantino recently confirmed they "will be at the World Cup."

Potential Replacements

Should Iran's status change, Italy is not the logical replacement. The United Arab Emirates, the next-highest-ranked Asian country not to have qualified, is considered the most likely alternative.

Italy's Football Woes

Italy's third consecutive absence from a World Cup finals has sparked deep introspection in the country's football scene. This month, football federation president Gabriele Gravina resigned, and Gennaro Gattuso stepped down as national-team manager. Additionally, Italy faces a race against time to build and renovate stadiums suitable for co-hosting Euro 2032 with Turkey.
