Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided the clearest indication yet regarding Anthony Gordon's future, as speculation linking the winger with Arsenal continues to intensify. The 24-year-old has been on the Gunners' radar in recent weeks, with his situation at St. James' Park remaining a subject of intense debate.
Arsenal's Interest and Potential Moves
It is understood that Arsenal's interest in Gordon is genuine, with the club potentially looking to bolster their attacking options this summer. This comes despite the substantial outlay on Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, who cost over £100 million combined. Gyokeres had a slow start to the season but has since found his form, netting 21 goals across all competitions, while Madueke has managed only seven goals.
Other Suitors and Financial Considerations
Bayern Munich have also been linked with the England international, but Newcastle will not sell him cheaply. The Magpies paid £45 million for Gordon in 2023 and, with a 15% sell-on clause owed to Everton, they are expected to demand full market value. The club's financial situation, particularly the Squad Cost Ratio, may necessitate player sales to fund new signings, and Gordon could be one of those moved on.
Howe's Tactical Explanation
Gordon's status as an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest only fueled speculation. Howe explained that the decision was tactical, citing the team's improved defensive solidity in recent games. He stated, "Obviously, he has returned from an injury. I am looking at the team, and I am pleased with how the team has performed in the last three games. So I didn't want to make too many changes."
In a radio interview, Howe elaborated: "It was tactical. The team has performed well in Anthony's absence, we have gone with a bit more solidity with Joelinton playing wide. One winger on one side to strengthen us defensively as we weren't happy with how we were defending. Since January, we have been disappointed with a strange structure. Ant has come back to fitness and is training well but also I am looking at the future."
Gordon's Commitment and Future Plans
For now, Gordon remains committed to Newcastle, but he is among those who could be sold to generate funds. Reports suggest he would prefer a move to London if he leaves St. James' Park this summer. However, Gordon has dismissed speculation in the past, saying, "About me? I haven't seen them. What are they saying? It's the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat."
Gordon is under contract until 2030, giving Newcastle a strong negotiating position. Liverpool also remain interested, having seen a proposed deal collapse in 2024.
