Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly stated she is facing serious security threats, a situation she claims has been inflamed by former President Donald Trump. The announcement came after Trump withdrew his political endorsement and launched a series of verbal attacks against the once-loyal ally.
A Public Rift and Alleged Threats
In a post on the social media platform X, Greene declared that ‘a hot bed of threats against me are being fueled and egged on by the most powerful man in the world’. She did not name Trump directly but clarified it was ‘the man I supported and helped get elected’.
Greene revealed that private security firms had contacted her with ‘warnings for my safety’ following Trump's decision on Friday to end his support for her. She linked the aggressive rhetoric to past incidents, stating it has ‘historically led to death threats and multiple convictions of men who were radicalised’.
The Core of the Dispute
The public fallout stems from a growing list of policy disagreements between Greene and Trump. The most prominent point of contention is the release of government documents related to the late financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. Greene is a vocal advocate for full transparency, while the Trump administration has shown reluctance.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to hold a vote next week on whether to release the entirety of unclassified Epstein communications and documents.
Trump’s fury was evident on his own social media platform, where he branded Greene as ‘Marjorie “Traitor” Green’ and a ‘disgrace’ to the Republican Party. He referred to her as ‘Wacky Marjorie’ and threatened to endorse a challenger in the next midterm elections.
From Loyalist to Dissenter
This marks a significant break for Greene, who was previously a staunch defender of Trump and his Maga movement. The rift has been simmering for months, with Greene finding herself at odds with Trump on several key issues, including:
- US military aid to Israel
- The federal government shutdown
- The release of the Epstein files
Trump has accused her of going ‘Far Left’ and complained that all he witnessed from her recently was ‘COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!’ He added that he ‘can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day’.
In her defence, Greene posted that she had supported Trump with ‘too much of my precious time, too much of my own money’, and fought for him when other Republicans turned away. She concluded with a definitive statement: ‘I don’t worship or serve Donald Trump.’
The trajectory of Greene's dissatisfaction dates back to at least May, and her recent criticism has even won her some unexpected, albeit cautious, admiration from Democratic quarters. The escalating war of words highlights the ongoing turbulence within the Republican party as it navigates its post-Trump identity.
