In a stunning televised appearance, Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene launched a blistering attack on President Donald Trump, accusing him of a profound betrayal of the American people.
A Public Clash on CNN
The fiery exchange occurred on Sunday morning during CNN's State of the Union programme. This marked Greene's first appearance on the network since President Trump himself had labelled her a 'traitor' following a series of public disagreements between the two. The interview highlighted the deepening chasm within the Republican Party, with Greene seizing the opportunity to voice her vehement opposition to the President's recent diplomatic actions.
The Oval Office Meeting That Sparked Outrage
The central focus of Greene's ire was President Trump's decision to welcome Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa to the White House. Greene expressed outrage that Trump had laughed and joked with al-Sharaa in the Oval Office, despite the Muslim leader's status as a specially-designated global terrorist.
The congresswoman provided a damning recap of al-Sharaa's background for the audience. She noted that the Saudi-born leader had joined a terror group in Iraq just before the US invasion in 2003. He was subsequently captured by American forces and imprisoned for five years until 2011. Most notably, there has been a $10 million bounty on his head for years.
A 'Slap in the Face' to American Veterans
Greene framed the President's actions as a direct insult to the US military. She stated that welcoming such a figure was a 'disgrace and slap in the face' to the thousands of veterans who have fought and sacrificed in the Middle East.
To compound the insult, Greene pointed out that this meeting took place on a particularly symbolic date: the 250-year anniversary of the United States Marines. This timing, she argued, made the President's cordial engagement with a former terrorist an even greater act of betrayal against the nation's heroes and their legacy.
