Tensions ran high in the GB News studio as host Nana Akua clashed with political commentator Chris Kunzler in an explosive on-air row over a post by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attacks against Israeli civilians.
On Wednesday (October 7), memorials took place in Israel on the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attack that sparked the war in Gaza. Families paid tribute to their loved ones at some of the sites where about 1,200 people were killed in the assault, and 251 were taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 74,200 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are seen as reliable by the UN.
Mayor's post divides residents
Zohran Mamdani sparked backlash with his anniversary post marking the event online. The mayor of New York accused Israel of genocide and war crimes, dividing residents over his bombshell comments.
Hours after the post went live, Nana welcomed Chris Kunzler onto the show to delve deeper into the mayor's statement and its repercussions. He began: "I think it's an absolutely fine statement that is being blown out of proportion for no reason."
Guest defends statement
He continued: "He does make reference to the fact that Israeli's died on October 7th and were killed. He talks about war crimes, but most importantly, he talks about what is going on for Palestinians."
"I'm sorry, you can sit there, and you can tell me about what happened on October 7th, but what you cannot sit there and tell me is that Israelis are suffering right now. Palestinians are the ones in the Gaza Strip who live a bare existence that is awful."
