Furyk to Lead US Ryder Cup Team in 2027
Jim Furyk is set to return as the United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland, according to sources familiar with the decision. The Associated Press has learned that Furyk will take the helm as the Americans seek to overcome a European team that has dominated the competition over the past three decades.
Furyk becomes the fourth US captain to receive a second chance in the modern era, which began in 1979 when continental Europe joined the Ryder Cup. Three individuals aware of the selection process confirmed that the Ryder Cup committee chose Furyk after Tiger Woods withdrew from consideration following his arrest on suspicion of DUI on March 27. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the PGA of America has not yet made an official announcement.
Furyk previously captained the US team in 2018 at Le Golf National in Paris, where Europe secured a decisive victory. During that event, his four captain's picks struggled, posting a combined record of 2-10-0. Europe built a record seven-point lead after two days at Bethpage Black last year and maintained its advantage to secure a second consecutive win under captain Luke Donald, who will return for a third stint as captain in Ireland.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be held in Ireland, marking another chapter in the storied rivalry between the US and Europe.
