A US Senate committee hearing featuring Dr Anthony Fauci revealed that politicizing science remains a vital political tactic six years after the pandemic.
The high-profile hearing, chaired by Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, was pitched as an investigation into the origins of the Covid pandemic but quickly became a forum for recrimination of the former top government scientist.
Rand Paul’s ‘Unhinged Obsession’
The hearing centered on Paul’s long-standing assertion that the pandemic began as a “leak” from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, despite virologists viewing a natural animal-to-human jump as more likely. Paul argued that Fauci “could be responsible for this entire pandemic” because the National Institutes of Health provided a sub-grant to the institute.
Fauci, who served as a key adviser to Presidents Trump and Biden, has testified before at least a dozen Senate hearings previously. This time, he invoked the Fifth Amendment, saying: “Under the advice of my attorneys I will invoke my right … to refrain from answering your questions.” He described Paul’s investigation as an “unhinged obsession” with seeing him “behind bars.”
Criticism of Scientists Continues
A group of 155 scientists wrote an open letter urging the government to stop the “vilification and harassment of many American scientists.” The letter stated: “The charges against Dr Fauci are baseless … No credible evidence has been produced to support these absurd charges.”
Paul’s Frustration with Fifth Amendment
Fauci received a presidential pardon before Biden left office, leading to debate about whether the Fifth Amendment can be invoked after a pardon. Paul told Fauci: “There will be repercussions to your refusal to testify today.” He later said he intends to call for a contempt of Congress vote. Senator Josh Hawley added: “You don’t have any rights under the fifth amendment. This is about contempt.”
Republican Criticism Wide-Ranging
Republicans attacked Fauci on multiple fronts. Senator Ron Johnson accused him of covering up unfavorable information about Covid vaccines, which he called “experimental gene therapy.” Senator Bernie Moreno demanded Fauci apologize to those affected by pandemic policies, calling him a “total and complete disgrace.” Senator Joni Ernst criticized use of aborted fetal tissue in research. Democratic Senator Gary Peters warned the hearing could deter scientific experts from public service.
Criticizing Science Important for Republicans
The hearing exemplified how criticizing scientists has become a key political outlet. Senator Richard Blumenthal said: “For the past 18 months, the Trump administration has been engaged in a campaign to rewrite this history. Today’s proceeding, I fear, is part of that effort.”
