The Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee has unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, following widespread calls for his resignation after he proposed selling a stake in the World Cup to private investors.
Controversial Proposal Withdrawn
The 56-year-old executive faced intense backlash last week over the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which was met with criticism from UEFA, who vowed to boycott the tournament if the plans proceeded. The backlash led Infantino to shelve the proposals, calling it an act of consolation rather than concrete plans.
Despite the withdrawal, Infantino continued to face calls for his job from furious fans and governing bodies. In an emergency meeting held in Rabat, executives expressed their faith in Infantino and issued a statement hitting out at "attacks on its integrity."
CAF's Endorsement
CAF has now reaffirmed its commitment to Infantino, stating: "The CAF EXCO also unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and thanked him for his support for African Football, over the years."
The statement also thanked Infantino, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, and the FIFA Administration for organizing a successful FIFA World Cup 2026.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said: "CAF welcomes and endorses the 'Joint Update' by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafström. CAF will continue to focus on making African Football amongst the best in the world and is reaffirming its commitment to adhering to global governance, transparency and auditing best practices."
Commitment to Governance
Motsepe emphasized that adherence to governance, due process, and transparency is crucial and non-negotiable for Africa, and that CAF expects the same from its partners. He reiterated CAF's commitment to working with FIFA and other stakeholders to uphold global best practices.
CAF also plans to continue developing players, coaches, and infrastructure, with progress in discussions with sponsors and investors to ensure financial self-sufficiency.
