TalkTV's Kevin O'Sullivan erupted into a blistering rant on Monday, following Andy Burnham's trip to Kyiv. "You can rely on my undying support," he quipped, mocking the PM's promise to Ukraine. "How about some undying support to the people of this country? How about not increasing the foreign aid bill and instead giving the money to the British people?" he fumed.
O'Sullivan's Furious Attack
"We need this money. What the hell are you people doing?" he said, slamming Burnham and his Labour Government. "Why are you spending it on migrants and foreign countries? What is it that you hate about the people of this country so much that you won't spend any of our tax money on us?"
Noting that he'd be discussing another "eye-watering bill" later on in the programme, O'Sullivan told viewers, "I can assure you, I don't want to be a harbinger of doom, but we are hurtling toward economic hell in a handcart. Pretty soon, the drawbridge is going to come crashing up, and we will be blocked out of our future."
Burnham's Visit to Ukraine
The journalist's comments came just hours after Burnham arrived in Ukraine on his first foreign trip as prime minister. Kicking off his visit on Monday, the Labour leader marked Ukraine's 35th Independence Day by laying a wreath and flowers at the graves of soldiers at the National Military Cemetery. He was also spotted speaking with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, before meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Showing his support for Ukraine, Burnham said: "On Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes."
Support for Ukraine
"I am proud of the contribution our country has made to Ukraine, and I want the Ukrainian people to hear it directly from me that our support will not waver. After all, Ukraine's security is our security."
"The friendship between our two countries will long outlast Russia's illegal war. In both the fight and in the rebuilding to come, we will stand with Ukraine and deliver opportunities for people across both our countries. Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve. We will not back down until there is a just and lasting peace."
Call for More Weaponry
During his trip, the PM also encouraged Washington to go "further" by providing Kyiv with more weaponry and air defence missiles. "We do have close conversations with our US colleagues about the situation here, and we will continue to do that," he said.
"They have provided funding, they have provided defensive support, and I think that will continue. We need to go further together, I think, because there are some urgent problems that Ukraine is facing."
