Epstein Emails Reveal He Advised Russia on Handling Trump Before Summit
Epstein advised Russia on Trump before Putin summit

Thousands of documents from the estate of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have revealed his alleged attempts to influence international diplomacy, including advising Russian government figures on how to deal with then-US President Donald Trump.

The Email Exchanges

The startling claims are contained within 23,000 documents handed over to the US House Oversight Committee. A key 2018 email exchange between Epstein and Thorbjørn Jagland, the former Prime Minister of Norway and then-Secretary General of the Council of Europe, exposes the financier's efforts to position himself as an intermediary.

In June 2018, Epstein wrote to Jagland, suggesting he inform Putin that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov could gain insight by talking to him. Epstein referenced the late Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, noting, "Churkin was great. He understood Trump after our conversations."

Epstein then laid out a simple strategy, stating, "It is not complex. He must be seen to get something. It is that simple." Jagland, who has previously faced criticism for his perceived soft stance on Russia, replied that he would suggest the idea to Lavrov's assistant.

Context and Aftermath of the Helsinki Summit

This communication occurred just weeks before the highly anticipated summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. The fallout from that meeting was significant, with many critics lambasting Trump's performance.

Epstein's own critical view of the summit was laid bare in a subsequent email exchange with former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Summers wrote, "Do the Russians have stuff on Trump? Today was appalling even by his standards."

Epinson replied in agreement, writing, "My email is full with similar comments, wow. I'm sure his view is that it went super well. He thinks he has charmed his adversary.. Admittedly he has no idea of the symbolism. He has no idea of most things."

Broader Implications of the Revelations

These documents paint a picture of a man deeply enmeshed in the circles of global power, actively trying to shape diplomatic relations between world superpowers. The revelations raise fresh questions about the extent of Epstein's influence and the nature of his connections to various political figures internationally.

The release of these emails to the House Oversight Committee ensures that the shadowy networks of influence peddling associated with Epstein will continue to be scrutinised, adding another complex layer to the understanding of modern political lobbying and back-channel diplomacy.
