Alastair Campbell Slams Media for Ignoring Farage's £5M Gift
Campbell Hits Out Over Farage £5M Gift Coverage

Alastair Campbell has criticised the media for failing to adequately cover Nigel Farage's £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire, arguing that it deserves more scrutiny. The former Downing Street communications chief made the remarks at the Sport Industry Awards on Thursday, following revelations about the payment from Reform donor Christopher Harborne.

Disparity in Media Coverage

Campbell, who served as Tony Blair's spin doctor, highlighted what he perceives as a double standard in reporting. He pointed out that while Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced weeks of headlines over accepting £19,000 in clothes and glasses from Labour peer Waheed Ali, Farage's much larger gift has received minimal attention.

“Nigel Farage gets exposed for taking £5m without declaring it, it's not even on the news,” Campbell told The Mirror. “Whereas Keir Starmer gets his specs paid for by Waheed Ali and gets a few Arsenal tickets and it leads the news for weeks.”

Political Implications

Campbell stressed the importance of the Labour government's success, warning that failure could pave the way for right-wing populism, which he described as a “total and complete disaster for the country.” He urged voters to support Labour in upcoming elections.

“All I'm saying about the Labour government is vote Labour on Thursday,” he said. “If the Labour government fails it means that the likelihood of going down the right-wing populist route, which would be a total and complete disaster for this country, is likely.”

Calls for Investigation

The £5 million gift, given to Farage in 2024 before he announced his candidacy for Parliament, has sparked controversy. The Conservative Party has referred the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, questioning why the sum does not appear in the members' register of interests.

Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake stated: “As a new Member of Parliament, Mr Farage was obliged to report all political donations and political gifts he received during the previous 12 months. The Conservatives are today referring Nigel Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. This £5 million raises serious questions.”

Labour's Anna Turley added: “Nigel Farage appears to have broken the rules again by failing to declare this cash from his billionaire backer. It's not good enough for Reform to gloss over these egregious acts and further erode public trust in politics.”

Reform UK's Response

Reform UK has defended the payment, describing it as an “unconditional personal gift” given before Farage's election. A party spokesperson said: “This was a personal unconditional gift that was given before he was elected. We are confident everything has been declared in accordance with the rules.”

The Electoral Commission has indicated it is considering whether to investigate the matter. Harry Quilter-Pinner of the IPPR think-tank noted: “Reports that Christopher Harborne provided Nigel Farage with £5m shortly before his change of stance on standing as an MP will inevitably prompt questions.”
