The HM Passport Office has issued a critical warning to all British citizens, revealing that many individuals across the nation may unknowingly hold an invalid passport. This travel document is essential for international journeys, with adult passports typically valid for ten years and children's passports for five years.
The Cost of Passport Applications
Currently, obtaining a UK passport involves specific fees. An adult passport costs £94.50 through an online application, while the paper form version is priced at £107. For children, the online application fee is £61.50, and the paper form costs £74. However, paying these fees is only the first step in securing a valid travel document.
The Crucial Validation Step
Upon receiving your new passport, there is a mandatory action required to validate it. Failure to complete this step means the passport cannot be used for travel, as highlighted in recent reports. The HM Passport Office emphasized this point in a recent alert on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The office stated: "Don't forget to sign your passport! Most people over the age of 11 will need to sign their passport, and can't use it until it's signed. Unless your passport states 'The holder is not required to sign', you must use a black ballpoint pen and sign on the holder's signature line."
Official Guidance from Gov.uk
Additional guidance available on the Gov.uk website clarifies that a passport received without a signature is not a valid travel document until the holder signs it. HM Passport Office strongly advises customers to sign their new passport immediately upon receipt.
The guidance further explains: "A passport may not be valid for travel if a customer has made a mistake when signing, such as signing the wrong name. Passports that were issued with a digitally printed signature remain valid until their expiry date."
Common Mistakes to Avoid
To ensure your passport remains valid, avoid these critical errors:
- Never sign your passport using a pencil or coloured ink.
- Do not include any additional information beyond your signature.
- Avoid using a signature that differs from your usual one.
- Do not erase or cross out a signature, as this could damage the page.
- Refrain from applying correction fluid on the signature line.
These actions could potentially invalidate your passport, leading to travel disruptions and complications. It is essential to follow the official guidelines precisely to maintain the validity of your travel document.
