Donald Trump was cut off mid-answer during a television interview after an interviewer questioned what he described as the President's "obsession" with wind energy. The awkward exchange unfolded as Trump veered from a discussion about China and artificial intelligence into criticism of wind power, which he once again described as "a disaster."
Interviewer interrupts Trump's wind energy rant
As the President continued his remarks, Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman interrupted, saying: "I don't know what your obsession is with that." Trump immediately pushed back, replying: "You know what my obsession is? I want the country to be successful."
Sherman then attempted to steer the conversation back on track, but Trump continued defending his views on energy policy. The journalist also pointed out that not everyone within the Republican Party agreed with the President's stance. "Some Republicans are against you on that too," Sherman said. Trump responded: "That's because they don't understand business."
Social media reacts to the exchange
The exchange quickly circulated on social media, where viewers were divided over Sherman's handling of the interview. Some praised the interviewer for challenging the President while keeping the discussion moving. Trump has frequently criticised wind power, arguing it is inefficient and harmful to the economy, despite renewable energy continuing to expand across the United States. The President has also developed a reputation for combative exchanges with interviewers.
In June, he abruptly ended an interview with NBC's Meet the Press after clashing with host Kristen Welker. During the tense exchange, Trump questioned whether Welker was "crooked" or "stupid" before ending the interview, saying: "Let's call it quits because I've had enough. Thank you darling. Have a good time."
