One Nation's immigration targets have been described as “all over the shop” after Barnaby Joyce said his One Nation colleague David Farley misspoke when he remarked the party's net migration target was “not too different” from Labor's.
Farley's comments and Joyce's response
Farley ruffled feathers when he told the ABC that while One Nation's net overseas migration target was 130,000, it would allow an additional 100,000 migrant workers (including skilled workers, backpackers, and labour through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme) in at a minimum. But Joyce claimed Farley had made a rookie mistake, saying “when people are new in parliament, they can sometimes get things incorrect… God knows I've done it enough”.
Political reaction
The shadow defence minister, James Paterson, said the latest incident was “very typical” of One Nation, and “yet more evidence of why they're just not fit to govern”.
Joyce made his comments on Monday, after Pauline Hanson also intervened on Sunday.
