The American Medical Association and American Hospital Association have issued scathing rebukes of former President Donald Trump after he called for the "termination" of the US Constitution to overturn the 2020 election results.
Medical Leaders Sound Alarm
In an extraordinary move, America's foremost healthcare organisations have entered the political fray following Trump's controversial statement on his Truth Social platform. The former president declared that the discovery of "massive & widespread fraud & deception" should invalidate all "rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution."
Dr Jack Resneck, President of the American Medical Association, delivered a powerful response, stating: "Health care professionals pledge to do no harm, and that includes doing no harm to democracy. Physicians are trained to assess symptoms, diagnose pathology, and prescribe evidence-based treatments. The symptoms of an ailing democracy are clear."
Healthcare Community United in Defence of Democracy
The American Hospital Association echoed these concerns, with President Rick Pollack emphasising that "hospitals and health systems are rooted in and deeply committed to their communities and the patients they serve" and therefore have a stake in preserving democratic institutions.
The medical associations' intervention comes amid growing concern about threats to democratic norms and institutions in the United States. Their statements highlight how traditionally non-partisan professional bodies are increasingly feeling compelled to speak out on fundamental democratic principles.
Political Fallout Intensifies
Trump's comments have created significant controversy within Republican circles, with some party members distancing themselves from the former president's extreme position. However, many of his closest allies have remained silent or defended his right to challenge the election outcome.
The situation underscores the ongoing tensions within American politics as the country prepares for the next presidential election cycle, with democratic institutions facing unprecedented challenges from within.
