New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been on an endorsement blitz, backing leftist candidates in key congressional races. His moves have irked some Democrats but are seen by others as a cautious strategy from a rising political star.
Mamdani's Endorsements
Mamdani has endorsed Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier for Congress. Lander is a former city comptroller challenging incumbent Dan Goldman in New York's 10th district. Valdez, a state representative and union organizer, is running in the 7th district against Antonio Reynoso, the Brooklyn borough president. Avila Chevalier, a political newcomer, is challenging five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the 13th district.
Strategic or Risky?
Some observers see Mamdani's endorsements as strategic, leveraging his popularity to boost aligned candidates. However, they have also sparked backlash from established Democrats, including Representative Nydia Velázquez, who accused Mamdani of being untrustworthy. Others view his support as a sign of ideological consistency, especially on issues like Palestinian rights and labor organizing.
Building a Socialist Bench
Mamdani is focused on building a bench of democratic socialist legislators, recognizing he cannot implement his vision alone. Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of DSA's NYC chapter, noted that Mamdani is invested in growing the movement beyond his own mayoralty.
Cautious in State Races
In state-level endorsements, Mamdani has been more cautious, backing only three of seven DSA candidates running for open seats. This approach aims to avoid crossing legislators he will need to work with.
Looking Beyond NYC
Questions remain whether Mamdani will extend his influence nationally, following the model of Senator Bernie Sanders. Christopher Robbins of Hell Gate suggested it might be early, but the possibility is real.
