Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf have unveiled their latest scheme: a plan to send foreign prisoners to countries like El Salvador or Kosovo. The announcement comes after a week of botched policy launches that failed to gain traction.
Failed Attempts Precede New Plan
Last week, Farage proposed using the Royal Navy to stop small boats in the Channel, but the French government swiftly rejected it, calling it a violation of sovereignty. Days later, Yusuf announced plans to jail bosses employing undocumented workers, but Labour pointed out such legislation already exists, leading to Yusuf being mocked.
The New Proposal
At a London hotel, the duo presented a 16-page document outlining plans to deport foreign criminals to willing countries. The plan mirrors a similar approach by Donald Trump in the US. However, details are sparse, and questions remain about enforcement.
When pressed by Channel 4 News on how deportees would be barred from returning, Yusuf said: "So the direct answer to your question comes down to negotiations with those foreign governments."
Criticism and Questions
The Reform document claims housing a foreign criminal abroad costs half as much as in the UK, but no evidence was provided. The Mirror was not given the chance to question Farage, though his former advisor Raheem Kassam was invited to ask about media treatment.
A Bloomberg reporter asked when the party would address trade, foreign policy, and defence. Farage replied: "Are there more gaps to be filled? Yes, there are, but it's very much a work in progress, and we will be ready (if an early general election is called)."
Farage ended the press conference abruptly, avoiding questions from several outlets, including The Mirror. He faces a by-election on Thursday where his main rival is Count Binface, and a standards probe into a £5 million undeclared gift may reopen.
