George Orwell's observation that political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable perfectly describes the current flood of verbiage about immigration from the ruling elite, according to a scathing opinion piece by Leo McKinstry. The writer argues that politicians are gripped by a kind of institutional schizophrenia, oscillating between ideological belief in open borders and cynical lip service to robust British public opinion.
Failed pledge to 'smash the gangs'
McKinstry highlights the unfulfilled pledge to 'smash the gangs,' noting the government has failed to take tough, realistic steps such as opening a centre outside Europe to process asylum claims or leaving the European Convention on Human Rights. He criticises the Border Agency's boats acting as a 'quasi-ferry service' for illegal migrants, calling it collusion with criminality.
On Tuesday, a 49-foot dinghy reached the English coast with 230 illegal migrants on board, easily a record, demonstrating the arrogance of gangsters emboldened by such feebleness.
Burnham's tone-deaf response
McKinstry finds no sign that Andy Burnham brings original thought to immigration. When asked about plans for further taxpayer-funded accommodation for asylum-seekers, Burnham proved 'astonishingly tone deaf,' promising to look at the scheme again but insisting all areas of 'the country will have to play their part.'
These plans have provoked widespread opposition. In Thetford, Norfolk, 15 people were arrested during protests outside properties designated as asylum homes. There has been greater uproar over a proposal to build a camp for 1,200 asylum seekers near Piddington, Oxfordshire, a village of just 400 residents.
No mandate for mass immigration
McKinstry argues that over 80% of Channel migrants are young men of military-service age from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, yet most are allowed to settle without proper checks. He claims some are bound to be extremists or terrorists, while others will be domestic abusers or perverts, and all who arrive illegally are by definition criminal.
The writer says it is outrageous for the Prime Minister to tell the public to 'do our bit,' effectively propping up a criminal racket. He insists no major party ever stood on a platform of open borders, and no one ever voted for this cultural and social revolution, making it sickening for Burnham to expect the public to cheer on this destructive project.
