On Yom Kippur, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged unwavering support for Manchester's Jewish community, reflecting on the terror attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue last year.
In a personal statement marking the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Burnham recalled arriving at the synagogue that morning and standing with people in shock. "I'll be honest about what I found there. It was not only grief. It was fear," he wrote.
Remembering the victims
Burnham paid tribute to Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, who were murdered in the "vile antisemitic terror attack" at the door of their synagogue, defending those praying inside. He noted their courage and that of Rabbi Walker and others who held the door with them, saying "their courage is why more families went home that day."
The Prime Minister acknowledged that the fear and anxiety caused by the attack have not faded with time for many Jewish people in Manchester and across the UK, especially as communities gather again for prayer.
Commitment against hatred
Burnham said no one should ever feel afraid to worship, celebrate their faith, or take part in British life. He promised that his government will stand with the Jewish community, confront antisemitism wherever it appears, and ensure those who spread hatred and division never succeed.
He also highlighted the values that endured after the attack: courage, solidarity and community. "The other thing I saw last year was Manchester at its best," he wrote, describing neighbours turning up, faith leaders holding one another up, and a country speaking with one voice.
Burnham concluded by saying Heaton Park has lived by a simple idea since that day: to remember is to do good. He wished Jewish communities reflection, strength and hope for the year ahead.
