Migrant crossings of the English Channel fell to zero for eight days despite favorable weather conditions, according to Home Office figures. No small boats made the journey from July 13 to July 20, a sharp drop from earlier in the month.
In July overall, 555 asylum seekers crossed on eight vessels. On July 10, a record 128 people were packed into a single boat, far exceeding the usual average of about 60 per craft.
New French Measures and Funding
In April, Labour agreed to pay France £662 million over three years (2026-2029) to strengthen controls and fund new tactics to stop crossings. A new French riot police unit, the Compagnie républicaine de sécurité (CRS), with around 50 specially trained officers, has been deployed to prevent migrants from attempting crossings, including those who have become violent.
Drones and helicopters now monitor beaches, and an additional 30 maritime officers and a new vessel target smugglers' taxi boats. A Home Office spokeswoman said there is now a 40% increase in law enforcement, intelligence, and military officers to track down and stop illegal migrants boarding boats.
Recent Trends and Seizures
French authorities seized 53 illegal migrant boats in May, but 29 still reached the UK. The Home Office said it is bearing down on small boat crossings, noting a landmark deal with France to boost enforcement and put people smugglers behind bars. The spokeswoman added that joint work has stopped over 45,000 attempted crossings since the election, and almost 70,000 people here illegally have been removed or deported – an increase of 41%.
Between January and June this year, over 11,800 migrants entered the UK illegally via small boats, compared to a record 19,000 in the same period in 2025. Nationalities include Afghans, Eritreans, Iranians, Iraqis, Syrians, and Vietnamese. Around 2,000 mostly male migrants arrive each month, but the sudden drop suggests something is stemming the tide.
Weather and Political Reactions
Forecaster Jim Dale of British Weather Services said the lack of crossings was unlikely due to bad weather, as conditions have been benign. He stated: "I can't see any weather reasons for the drop in numbers."
Reform UK declined to comment on the zero numbers. Chris Philp MP, Conservative Shadow Home Secretary, said: "Keir Starmer oversaw more illegal Channel crossings than any other Prime Minister – that is the legacy Andy Burnham is inheriting. One week of minimal crossings does not make up for that record, and it has far more to do with high waves in the Channel than with any grip on the problem."
NCA Operations
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has had recent successes. In May, more than 30 boats and engines, 360 pumps, and over 9,000 life jackets were seized in Germany. In June, 25 boats were seized in Bulgaria. On July 7, a 42-year-old Iraqi man was arrested in Kent on suspicion of smuggling migrants via small boats.
An NCA spokesman said: "Tackling organised immigration crime remains a top priority for the NCA, we are putting more resource into targeting the criminal networks behind it than ever before, and this is bringing operational results." The agency has around 100 ongoing investigations into top-tier organised immigration crime networks.
