US Vice President JD Vance has launched a fierce defence of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, accusing the media of misrepresenting the incident. Speaking at the White House, Vance insisted the officer acted in self-defence after Good allegedly tried to ram him with her car.
Vance criticised a CNN headline that read "Outrage after ICE officer kills US citizen in Minneapolis", calling it part of a pattern of misleading coverage by the "corporate media". He claimed the reporting put law enforcement at risk and described the incident as "an attack on law and order".
However, video footage of the incident suggests Good was driving away from the officer. There is no evidence she was part of a "broader leftwing network" using "domestic terror techniques", as Vance alleged without providing substantiation. An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
When asked what justified the shooting, Vance did not directly answer but repeated his assertion that Good tried to run over the officer. He dismissed questions about the ongoing investigation, accusing reporters of spreading propaganda and treating the officer as "some sort of federal assassin".
Vance's remarks come amid heightened tensions over immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump. The vice president also faced questions about the US operation in Venezuela, which he denied being excluded from planning for.
